Welcome to Collins Elementary School!
Dear Collins’ Families:
I hope that you have a wonderful Spring Break to reconnect with families and friends. I cannot believe that we are now into April and only have about 2 months left in this school year.
There were some fabulous assemblies in March. Third graders enjoyed the Mackinac Men. Forest Hill Northern Theater Group gave the students a showcase of the “Ramona Quimby” play. Also, we had famous children’s author, Laurie Kellar, here for an assembly with all of our students to discuss the writing process and illustrations. We also had different grades attending field trips including visiting Goodwillie. Thank you Mrs. Reyers, our media center specialist, for all your motivation and enthusiasm, in supporting our teachers and students in reading.
We enjoyed Spring musicals by our 1st graders at Forest Hills Northern. They did an outstanding job! Thank you, Mrs. Frens, for your direction in this and for all the parent volunteers.
Congratulations to all of our Odyssey of the Mind Teams who did an outstanding job at the Regional Competition in March. Thank you to Mrs. Patterson for all the coordinating of the teams this year. The Collins students’ creativity, ingenuity, and acting ability were showcased at Forest Hills Central.
Thank you Cari Porter and Kelly Stewart for your efforts in putting together the “Sundaes with Someone Special Night.” You cannot beat a night of ice cream and fun entertainment. The magic show was a success. We had almost 400 people attend the Sundaes and magic show. I am still recovering for the sawing in half part of the show.
Student council collected coins for Pasta for Pennies, a fundraiser for Leukemia research. Thank you to Mrs. Armbruster and our student council for choosing such a worthy cause and one that is close to the heart of many families here at Collins School.
Please note a change in the 1st Grade Mothers’ Day Tea date. We will be holding the tea on May 10, Thursday instead of May 11. We have our 4th grade Lansing Trip on May 11 and wanted to provide the opportunity for families with both 1st and 4th grade students to be able to attend both events. More details to follow.
Also, we will be holding a Global Learning Day on May 24 to exhibit the vast countries represented here at Collins. Look for a letter and listserv to give you more details.
Our Husky Hike Kick-Off will be on April 9. The Husky Hike monies will be used to help purchase new playground equipment. The total of the new playground equipment is approximately $50,000. The PTO will use $25,000 of their funds. We are hoping to raise the additional $25,000 with the Husky Hike.
Learning environment surveys will be in the school office if desired. The survey will help staff place students into next year’s classes with your specific input. We will not be able to honor specific teacher request. The survey is used to give input about learning styles and modalities.
Update: drop off and pick up is running a lot smoother. Please remember to pull all the way up to the stop sign.
We hope you find this website to be a useful resource for information – whether you are a prospective family, parent, student, or a community stakeholder. Like all websites, you will be able to find lots of information, interesting news and facts, and helpful tools. However, even with the best modern technology has to offer, sometimes there is no substitute for a human connection. We invite you to
visit our main office,
email us, or
contact our main office number at (616) 493-8900 where we will be happy to help you.
Thank you for your interest in and your support of Collins Elementary School.
Sincerely,
Mitchell Balingit
Principal

Tuesday, January 31 begins the Parent/Teacher conferences along with the Scholastic Book Fair. Come early or stay late after your conferences to browse the selection of books in the front lobby. Some great selections!
Also….for the month of February the Collins PTO is collecting gently used/new books for our sister school Buchanan Elementary in Grand Rapids. Why not clean out your old already read books and drop them in the bin in the front entryway and then get yourself/child a new book from the scholastic book fair. Or buy a book for you and one for Buchanan. Let’s support reading and getting books in to the hands of children.
